"The First Companions"
Long ago, there ruled a tyrant that corrupted his people and the vast lands of his mighty Kingdom. The people had had enough, and they started to gather followers to their side. The unspoken leader of this group was named Baron Valdemar. They decided to flee and build their own kingdom. They ran West and did not stop for many many years.
Finally they settled and the people insisted that Baron Valdemar become their King.As the years went by, years spent in hard labor striving to build this kingdom, the King inevitably grew older. He realized that he himself was a good ruler to his people, he was also pretty sure his son would be the same. But what of his son's sons? and the descendents that followed? How was there anyway that he, King Valdemar, could ensure the safety of his land and people? He went to a partially completed Bell tower that stood in a grove of trees, and for the next three days, he prayed. He was also a Mage so the prayer was entwined with his own spells of pleading. He prayed to all the benign Powers, every God and Goddess he could think of.
And finally, his prayers were answered; Not by one, but by three beings. A light shown down from the heavens and after it dispersed, there stood three white Companions. One of them approached him and King Valdemar heard in his mind "I choose You." Then, drawn by some unseen force, his son and Cheif Herald approached the grove. The two other Companions chose them.
King Valdemar decided that, while there could only be one King and one Heir, any person that a Companion chose would be a Herald. The answer to his prayers came at last. Since Companions would only choose people that were pure of heart, the King decreed that the heirs must be Heralds to become King/Queen. The cheif became the first Monarch's Own Herald, so that no matter what stresses there were in the world, the Monarch would always have someone he/she could completely trust and confide in.
More Companions continued to be Grove Born until there was enough of them to breed and maintain a herd. After that, only the Monarch's Own Companion would be Grove Born.

Okay, your character will be a member of a corrupt empire that is expanding to the East, north, and south. They are afraid of the west for unknown reasons. The empire is Biased, and cruel, and many people have been rallying behind a very outspoken Baron, Valdemar. Valdemar is currently trying to Gate to a safer area of the Empire.

Well, Unearthly Strength isn't a viable gift, but Regeneration would be healing(Kind Of) You see, magic users are usually physically weaker than other humans, which is why Mind Magic is better than magic, They can still function like normal human beings while practicing it.
