Trade comes in three forms. Land, Sea, and Air. Sea is the favorite for when trading, due to lower costs and more room (Generally Speaking). Land trade becomes costly, due to having to move across multiple countries (Generally Speaking). Other countries will have taxes for coming through their land. Then you have to buy their oil. Then you have to pay tolls. Also, its time consuming. Air is very expensive, due to oil costs. Though its fast, it also doesn't move as much "stuff" as by sea. Then there is sea. Sea is cost efficient and you can move a lot of "stuff."
Now, why trade? Because trade is great for the economy (normally). Its causes more competition, which leads to lower costs. It also diversifies the economy and can lead to other goods being formed. It will also make your citizens happier, as they can now get other goods.

I'm sick of blockades not working. No nation is 100% self dependant. I don't care who you are, what your nation's history is, or how much propaganda you shove down your nation's throat. I don't care if you believe you are 100% self dependant. If you don't trade, then your economy is in the GUTTER! If you get blockaded, you had better get your Navy and Airforce out there and blasting some ships. Or else, you are toast! Your economy will drop! I tried to find out how long it is assumed that a blockade can last before a nation is is trouble. I couldn't find anything, so we're going on 1 month. This means, you have one month to eliminate however many ships your opponent threw at you. There are ways around this. You just need to think!
Now, there are other methods to hurt an enemy with trade. There are Tariffs, Embargos, and Quotas. These have been used effectively by Japan to protect its many industries. Tarriffs are taxes, Embargos is a complete stop of a good from entering the country, and Quotas are a set amount that is allowed to be brought in. These can hurt, not as much as a Blockade, but they can hurt if you are a large buyer of a good.
